A Splash of Colour

Honky and Bobo were a couple of clowns
I mean real clowns
and real clowns at that
Big floppy shoes snag on escalator
Irony comes in many flavours
They drove a hearse called Calvary
Cruising
Honky smiles, Honky can’t help but smile

In a polite town of dull repute
children skip and drift
from the Sunday school prefabs
like dandelion seedlings in the wind
Little cherubs
Some hold at arms-length
Still wet paintings of their parents saviour
Honky and Bobo
drive into this same polite town of dull repute

Under the auspice of the Archbishop of Tinseltown
our two colourful clowns
take time to impress their services
upon the Sunday school teachers at tea
A tap dance, a tune, and a dry biscuit later
A shake of hands for next Sunday’s performance
And Honky leaves his calling card

It takes a lifetime for Honky and Bobo’s Sunday to turn
But for some it comes all too quickly
The clowns sing and dance
and play the fool
play Doubting Thomas
the tax collector
loaves and chocolate fishies
the children’s faces glow
as their young blood rises with the laughter
their trust is won!

Next Sunday, just another Sunday
sisters in white walk the well-worn path
towards the humble church
they’ve given a place in their hearts
White like angels
like virgins
like ritual sacrifice
No, definitely like angels
Skipping now, through the park
that backs onto the plastics factory

Skipping through green
A splash of colour in the periphery
Turn, don’t turn
The elder sister does turn
the periphery to the centre
does turn a splash of colour
into two clowns
one juggling, one on a unicycle
White angel sisters
shriek with delight
and fly over to alight
at the feet of the clowns

Now turning to form a line
the four skip and sway
skip and sway
once, twice, three times
around the oak tree
towards the park toilets
towards the park toilets
skip and sway
into the park toilets
The carving knife is drawn
and the laughter and squeals on innocence
Becomes the screams of death

One Honky the clown
releases with each plunge
releases from this mortal coil
babes baptised under their parents saviour
unto the saviour
A tear in Bobo’s eye
as their crusade, yet again, meets its moment of truth
sending white angel sisters
towards the white white light of God
